Hyundai Robotics joined hands with KT to give a big boost to expand the 5G-based smart business.

On May 10 (Fri.), 2019, Hyundai Robotics sealed an MOU for “5G-based robotic and smart business cooperation” with Chairman Hwang Chang-gyu of KT and Vice Chairman Kwon Oh-gap of Hyundai Heavy Industries Holdings at the KT Headquarters in Gwanghwamun, Seoul.

Under the agreement, the two companies plan to jointly develop 5G-based △ Smart robots, △ Mobile service robots, and △ Smart factory solutions, and Hyundai Robotics will provide robots and automation facilities, and smart factory platforms, while KT will be responsible for wired/wireless communication infrastructure and ICT platforms like 5G, AI, and cloud, respectively.

The two are involved in increasing the space efficiency of the factories by using wireless control technology and mobilize their efforts in developing smart robots that facilitate process relocation. On the other hand, they will seek to spread robots in the private sector through the development of AI mobile robots designed to supply services in hotels and cafes.

Moreover, through the development of a smart factory solution, they decided to jointly advance into the collaborative robot and machine vision market, and also take the lead in improving productivity and commercializing related technologies with this.

The government had previously announced that it would build 30,000 smart factories by 2022 in the presentation of “Small and Medium Enterprise Smart Manufacturing Innovation Strategy” last year and disclosed its plan to broaden the domestic robot market to 15 trillion KRW by 2023 at the “Robot Industry Promotion Strategy Report Meeting” held in Daegu in last March.

Chairman Hwang of KT said, “I think the smart factory is a key field in the 5G B2B market, and if it is combined with Hyundai Robotics' excellent robot technology and know-how, I think we can make the innovation in the Korean manufacturing industry in a short period of time,” and added, “We look forward to continuing business cooperation with the jointly-developed 5G.AI-based smart robots and smart factory solutions.”

Vice Chairman Kwon of Hyundai Heavy Industries Holdings said, “We will develop robots and smart solutions that lead the global market with KT, which has the world's best communication technology,” and “I hope that this cooperation would seed an opportunity to elevate the level of Korea’s manufacturing industry up one notch.”

Hyundai Robotics signed an agreement for the export of smart factory technology with HGZN China last September, and this March, the company has showcased its smart factory total platform H!-Factory at “Smart Factory Expo” held in Seoul, actively entering the market in smart factory sector in full force.
