The Hyundai Heavy Industries Group announced on November 19 that it held "the 1st general meeting of the Business Cooperation Committee of KT-Hyundai Heavy Industries Group" with KT at the Hyundai Robotics Robot Logistics System Demo Center in Gwangju-si, Gyeonggi-do, and shared the results of their past five months of collaboration.

KT and Hyundai Heavy Industry Holdings signed an agreement for strategic investment cooperation last June and began operating the Business Cooperation Committee for collaboration between the two companies. Specific approaches to the introduction of smart solutions focused on artificial intelligence, big data, and cloud technology were discussed in the committee.

In the field of robotics and smart factories, KT demonstrated its smart factory platform, and the committee reviewed the progress of robots for food and beverage (F&B) service, cleaning, and patrol, which are being jointly developed by both companies. In addition, the committee checked the development of a smart hospital solution and an unmanned forklift platform with remote control based on 5G (generation) and AI.

In the field of shipbuilding and heavy industry, the Hyundai Heavy Industries Group introduced an augmented reality (AR) remote inspection solution. There were also announcements about predictive maintenance solutions that detect and solve ship abnormalities in advance and AR remote training.

They were followed by demonstrations and introductions of smart logistics solutions, such as the Digital Twins Logistics Center for logistics platform innovation, AI predictive maintenance, and logistics automation. Along with these, the committee announced an unmanned patrol control system, a building control model, and others.

The opening ceremony of the Robot Logistics System Demo Center was also held on the same day.

A total of 12 types of cutting-edge automation systems were introduced, including a smart palletizing robot that automatically unloads various types of boxes, an unmanned forklift, and a smart automatic warehouse.

With a total floor area of 3,400 ㎡(1,030 pyeong), this center was jointly built by Hyundai Robotics with Hyundai L&S, a logistics subsidiary, and the facility is expected to help increase customer understanding and satisfaction by directly demonstrating robot-based logistics automation technology.

The Robot Logistics System Demo Center, where the smart logistics solutions of KT and Hyundai Heavy Industries are integrated, showed a robot stacking and moving objects (a smart palletizing robot), and quickly finding and shipping items needed for individual orders (a 3D shuttle with robot picking).

KT CEO Koo Hyeon-mo said, “Collaboration with the Hyundai Heavy Industries Group, which has global competitiveness in manufacturing, robotics, and logistics, is a decisive opportunity for KT to transform into a digital platform company,” and added, "We will play a decisive role for the companies pursuing “non-contact innovation” by developing diverse transformation solutions with Hyundai Heavy Industries.”

Chung Kisun, Vice President of Hyundai Heavy Industries & Construction Holdings, said, “We will prepare a new turning point for the overall logistics system based on digital innovation,” and added, “We will continue to cooperate in various fields in the future as well and make an active effort to create greater synergy.”
